Product:
Suzuki TL1000R Rectifier Regulator Fits 1998-2003
Description:
Hope this answers how a rectifier works! All 12V auto/ sportbike systems have some things in common. There is either an alternator or generator which is supplying an AC voltage that is fed to the rectifiers and the regulator.
The regulator is a device that monitoprs the battery (and system) voltage and regulates it to about 13.8V when running.
In an alternator system- it regulates the voltage by adjusting the current flowing in the alternator;s stator winding which directly controls the alternator;s output.
In a generator system- usually silicon controlled rectifiers are used and the regulator controls their gate voltage and that determines how much of the cycle they conduct (which again modulates the current flowing into the elctrical system).
If you are getting no charge- the procedure is:
1) Verify good output from the generator
2) Check rectifier output
3) Check voltage regulator
In many cases- the rectifier/regulator is a single module and can be replaced easily. That is usually what is blown
